Pick a taxon and the map recolours every country by how often it is detected in that country's gut metagenomes.

Data: Sandpiper 2.0.0 community profiles (GTDB R232 (Sandpiper 2.0.0, Zenodo 20419175)) for 306,165 catalog samples in 1,905 studies and 101 countries; the whole atlas payload is 22.9 MB and loads once per rank. See also the resource-paper figures.
Species: the 500 most prevalent species (detection ≥ 0.1 %).
Countries with fewer than 30 samples are grey. Prevalence = share of a country's samples with relative abundance ≥ 1e-04 (genus and above) or ≥ 1e-03 (species).

About this view — read before interpreting a map
- Study is the master confounder. Most studies sample one country and one life stage with one protocol; a country's colour is the mixture of its few studies (click a country to see them). Compare countries only when the study list looks comparable, and prefer the per-study dossiers.
- Repeated measures. Longitudinal cohorts contribute many samples per subject; n samples overstates the number of people.
- Depth. Detection at ≥ 1e-4 depends on sequencing depth; shallow studies under-detect rare taxa.
- Which runs are profiled. Sandpiper profiles Illumina runs ≥ 100 Mbp public before its snapshot; runs failing its QC (non-metagenome, synthetic, RNA, predicted non-gut, root coverage < 2) and samples whose body site is not primary gut were excluded (body_site_class == primary; not qc_non_metagenome / qc_synthetic / qc_rna / qc_predicted_ecological / qc_low_depth / qc_no_genus_assigned).
- Taxonomy. GTDB R232 (Sandpiper 2.0.0, Zenodo 20419175): names follow GTDB, so Prevotella copri is Prevotella, Bacteroides vulgatus is Phocaeicola vulgatus, and suffixed genera (Blautia_A) are GTDB placeholders.
- Hong Kong and Singapore are drawn as dots (the 110 m base map merges them into larger polygons). Country is missing for 4.0 % of samples.
