- Hybrid-sport participation is associated with gut microbiota composition: an exploratory longitudinal study. 2026 PMID 42625862 PMC13490064 own_data
Archive description
Hybrid sports integrate high-intensity resistance exercise with sustained aerobic demands, yet how this combined training phenotype relates to gut microbiota composition and its response to dietary intervention remains unclear. We investigated whether participation in a hybrid sport is associated with distinct gut microbiota composition and whether a three-month dietary intervention alters microbial structure and functional potential, using other trained athletes and sedentary adults as comparators. Study participants (n=40) were enrolled across three groups: hybrid-sport athletes, Muay Thai fighters, and sedentary adults. Stool samples were collected at baseline and after three months of intervention and analyzed using full-length 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing in all participants, with paired shotgun metagenomic sequencing performed in a subset to assess microbial functional pathways related to metabolism and inflammation modulation.
