Archive description

The world’s population is aging, with dramatic rises predicted in the coming decades, thus a healthy aged population is a major public health priority. However, the immune system declines with increasing age leading to increased susceptibility to infectious diseases, and suboptimal responses to vaccines, although this area remains poorly researched and the mechanisms are not understood. This project investigates the effects of DTP and influenza vaccination on the immune systems and compares the immune responses and vaccine efficacy between middle aged (30 – 50) and older (>70) participants. This project has applied state-of-the-art immunological methods to investigate the immune response to these two vaccines to determine how they modulate the immune system in the elderly and how they interact. In addition to immunological measurements, 64 faecal samples have been collected prior to vaccine delivery and 6-weeks post vaccination. Sample have been stored and DNA extracted according to the standardised processes and will enable investigation of the microbiome. This data is part of a pre-publication release. For information on the proper use of pre-publication data shared by the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute (including details of any publication moratoria), please see http://www.sanger.ac.uk/datasharing/
