Gut microbiome and frailty in Spanish older adults (case-control)

The gut microbiome, frailty syndrome and comorbidities: a complex network in aging

203 fecal samples from older adults in Spain (64 frail, 139 non-frail), analyzed by 16S rRNA and metagenomic sequencing in a case-control study of gut microbiota links to frailty, sarcopenia, and mobility. machine-written summary

Archive description

Frailty is an aging-associated geriatric syndrome characterized by losing muscle mass and strength, reduced endurance, decreased physiological reserves, and cognitive impairment. It is estimated that between 4 and 27% of elders suffer from frailty, being more prone to experience a lower quality of life and a higher risk of death, hospitalization and institutionalization. During aging, the gut microbiota, the second genome, changes and could influence in the health status and trigger physiological disorders.
