- Gut microbiome and metabolome reveal hormone-related and functional alterations in ER-positive breast cancer: a case–control study 2026 own_data
Archive description
Despite progress in diagnosis and treatment, breast cancer is the most common cancer among Canadian women and the second leading cause of cancer-related death. New approaches to reduce the burden of breast cancer are critical for improving public health. Estrogen is a known cause of the most common type of breast cancer (HR-positive). Bacteria in the gut can control estrogen levels. Changes in the types or amount of these bacteria can increase estrogen levels and in animal models, can lead to cancer development. However, studies in humans are very limited. To understand whether estrogen-related gut bacteria play a role in breast cancer development, we conducted a study of 70 women newly diagnosed with HR-positive breast cancer and 70 women without cancer (controls). Participants will be asked to complete questionnaires on dietary intake and health factors and provided a stool sample before and after they received hormone therapy or over the same time period for controls. The types and amounts of bacteria was measured using whole metagenome shotgun sequencing. Metabolites were measured in blood and stool. Differences in the types and amounts of bacteria and metabolites were compared between women with and without breast cancer. These results will provide new knowledge on how the microbiome may contribute to development of breast cancer, and may lead to new approaches to reduce the burden of breast cancer on women and their families.
