The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension for Adults with Diabetes (DASH4D) study evaluated the effects of a DASH-style diet on the gut microbiome of adults with type 2 diabetes. In this randomized, four-period crossover feeding trial, 97 participants consumed 5-week periods of either a DASH-style diet or a typical US diet and provided samples at baseline and after each feeding period. Compared with the typical US diet, the DASH4D diet significantly increased gut microbiome diversity, altered overall microbial community composition, and changed the abundance of 13 microbial species. The diet enriched Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, an important butyrate-producing bacterium, increased a butyrate-producer score, and enhanced expression of the gene encoding butyryl-CoA:acetate CoA-transferase, the terminal enzyme in butyrate synthesis. The DASH4D diet also increased circulating acetate concentrations. These findings indicate that a DASH-style diet promotes beneficial gut microbiome characteristics and short-chain fatty acid production in adults with type 2 diabetes.
