! Self-contradictory metadata

health condition: sequence archive and GMrepo disagree for 36 samples (e.g. liver_disease vs healthy_control) — withheld.

The sources disagree on 36 samples. Where two incompatible values exist for one sample (or one person's samples disagree on sex), neither value is published: the field is left empty here, in the sample sheet and in the downloads. Both sides, with their sources, are in gut_metadata_contradictions.parquet of the data package (what counts as a contradiction).

The presence of advanced fibrosis in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most important predictor of liver mortality. The aim of this study was to examine the diagnostic

accuracy of a gut-microbiota derived metagenomic signature for detecting the presence of advanced fibrosis in NAFLD. In this prospective study, we characterized the microbiome signatures associated with advanced fibrosis (defined as stage 3 or 4 fibrosis) in uniquely well characterized biopsy- and imaging-phenotyped patients with NAFLD. Gut microbiome

compositions of the patients were determined using whole-genome shotgun sequencing of DNA extracted from stool samples.
