Archive description
This study contains whole-genome shotgun metagenomic sequencing data from baseline faecal samples collected in the Italian cohort of the study “Gut microbiome profiles associated with simple liver steatosis in MASLD”. The cohort includes adults with morbid obesity undergoing bariatric surgery, with liver biopsy and histological evaluation used to classify participants as having simple steatosis or no steatosis. Individuals with histological steatohepatitis, significant fibrosis, recent antibiotic use, proton pump inhibitor use, metformin use, or other relevant exclusion criteria were not included in the analysis. The aim of the study was to characterize gut microbiota composition and functional potential in simple steatosis, the earliest clinically relevant stage of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), while minimizing confounding by common medications. These data were analysed together with independent Austrian and Swedish cohorts to assess microbiome signatures associated with simple steatosis across European populations spanning a broad range of body mass index.
